HOW TO USE OUTSHINE
Your step-by-step guide
Generic interview prep doesn't address what LGBTQIA+ candidates actually face. OutShine does. It's an AI coach that understands identity disclosure, workplace safety, bias, and the unique strengths you bring to every role.
1
Open OutShine
Visit the app link. No account needed, no sign-up, no personal information required. You'll see six practice categories on the home screen, each focused on a different interview challenge.
Choose a Category
2
Pick the area you want to practice. Each category contains 6 realistic interview scenarios. Not sure where to start? Try "Standard Skills" to warm up, then move to identity-specific categories.
Tip: You can practice multiple categories in one session. The home screen tracks how many questions you've practiced and your average score.
3
Set Your Disclosure Level
Before answering, choose how much you want to disclose about your identity. This changes the coaching you receive. You're never pushed to share more than you're comfortable with.
Answer the Question
4
Read the interview scenario and type your answer in the text box, just like you'd speak in a real interview. Don't overthink it — the goal is to practice your natural response, then improve from there.
Tip: Longer, more detailed answers get better feedback. Try to include a specific example or story when possible. Aim for at least 3-4 sentences.
5
Get Your Feedback
Click "Get Feedback" and within seconds you'll receive a detailed assessment including a score (1-5), your strengths, areas to improve, safety considerations, and an example of a strong answer. Use the example as inspiration — don't memorize it.
Practice Again
6
Click "Next Question" for a new scenario, or go back and try a different category. The more you practice, the more natural your responses become. Most people see improvement after just 3-5 practice rounds.
You control what you share
OutShine adapts its coaching based on how much you want to disclose about your identity. There's no right or wrong choice — it depends on you, the role, and the company.
Minimal
Keep it Professional
The AI coaches you on deflecting personal questions gracefully. Focus stays on your skills and qualifications. Best for environments where you're uncertain about safety, or when you simply prefer professional boundaries.
Moderate
Strategic Sharing
The AI helps you disclose strategically — sharing when it strengthens your candidacy while maintaining boundaries. Best when you've assessed the company has some inclusive signals but you want to be thoughtful.
Open
Authentic and Empowered
The AI coaches you on discussing your identity openly as a professional strength. Best for companies with strong DEI track records, LGBTQIA+ ERGs, or roles where your lived experience is directly relevant.
PRACTICE CATEGORIES
Six areas designed for
real interview challenges
Each category targets a specific challenge LGBTQIA+ candidates face. Here's why each one matters and examples of how to practice.
🌈 Navigating Identity at Work
Practice discussing your authentic self with confidence
Many LGBTQIA+ candidates face questions about name changes, resume gaps from transition, or pronoun preferences. These aren't standard interview questions — and most coaching doesn't prepare you for them. This category does.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: There's a gap on your resume. Can you tell me about that period?
Try saying: "That period was a time of significant personal growth. I used it to [pursue education/volunteer/develop skills]. I came out of it with a clearer sense of who I am and what I bring to a team, which I believe makes me a stronger candidate."
Why this matters: Resume gaps related to transition, mental health recovery, or family rejection are common in the LGBTQIA+ community. Practicing how to frame these confidently — without over-explaining — prevents being caught off guard.
🔍 Assessing Company Culture
Questions YOU should ask to evaluate workplace safety
The interview isn't just them evaluating you — you're evaluating them. This category teaches you to ask smart questions that reveal whether a company is genuinely inclusive or just performative.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: The interviewer says "We treat everyone the same here." How do you respond?
Try saying: "I appreciate that philosophy. I've found that the most inclusive teams I've been on actually celebrate differences rather than overlooking them. Can you tell me about any specific initiatives your company has for supporting diverse employees?"
Why this matters: "We treat everyone the same" can be a red flag — it sometimes means the company hasn't thought deeply about inclusion. Learning to probe further, diplomatically, helps you avoid accepting a role in an unsafe environment.
🛡️ Handling Bias & Microaggressions
Redirect inappropriate questions with grace and confidence
Illegal and inappropriate questions still happen in interviews — from "Are you married?" to "You don't look like what I expected." Having a practiced, composed response keeps you in control and lets you decide whether to continue.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: An interviewer misgenders you during the interview. How do you handle it?
Try saying: "Actually, I use [they/she/he] pronouns. No worries at all — I appreciate you being open to getting it right. As I was saying about my experience with [redirect back to qualifications]..."
Why this matters: A gentle correction followed by an immediate redirect shows confidence without derailing the interview. Practicing this makes it feel natural, not confrontational. You also learn to read whether the mistake was careless or a deeper red flag.
✨ Confidence & Self-Advocacy
Own your strengths and unique perspective
Years of systemic exclusion, rejection, or hiding parts of yourself can erode confidence. This category rebuilds it — helping you see your lived experience not as a liability, but as a genuine professional advantage.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: What makes you uniquely qualified for this role?
Try saying: "I bring a perspective that most candidates can't — I've navigated complex situations that required resilience, empathy, and creative problem-solving. For example, [specific achievement]. These experiences taught me to adapt quickly and connect with diverse groups of people, which directly applies to this role."
Why this matters: LGBTQIA+ candidates often undersell themselves. Practicing how to frame resilience, adaptability, and unique perspective as professional strengths changes how you walk into the room.
💼 Salary & Benefits Negotiation
Negotiate compensation that includes what matters to you
Benefits negotiation isn't just about salary — for LGBTQIA+ employees, healthcare coverage, domestic partner benefits, and inclusive policies can be make-or-break. Most people never practice asking for these. This category changes that.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: How would you negotiate for trans-inclusive healthcare coverage?
Try this: "I'm very excited about this opportunity. As I evaluate the full compensation package, comprehensive healthcare is important to me. Could you walk me through what your health plans cover? I want to make sure I understand the full scope of benefits available."
Why this matters: Many LGBTQIA+ candidates accept offers without asking about critical benefits — often because they don't know how to bring it up. Practicing these conversations makes them feel natural and professional, not awkward.
📋 Standard Interview Skills
Classic questions with affirming, identity-aware coaching
Even classic interview questions — "Tell me about yourself," "What's your greatest weakness?" — hit differently for LGBTQIA+ candidates. The coaching here is standard interview prep, but the feedback is always affirming and aware of your full context.
EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Q: Tell me about a time you worked on a diverse team. What did you learn?
Try this: "In my previous role, I worked on a team with people from very different backgrounds. I learned that the best ideas often come from unexpected perspectives, and that creating space for everyone to contribute — especially quieter voices — leads to stronger outcomes. I actively worked to make sure all team members felt heard and valued."
Why this matters: This is your warm-up category. Start here if you're new to interview prep, then move into the identity-specific categories as you build confidence.
